Preparing for the 21st Century

After reading the assigned article, I was excited to try some of the new literacies.  I am inspired by the Internet workshops and Internet projects.  I think both of those literacies can connect easily with my first grade curriculum.  Currently, our writing unit is called “Authors as Mentors.”  During this unit, we study a book and find a craft that makes that book so appealing and entertaining to read.  We look deeply at the authors and encourage students to try some of these crafts.  My plan is to let students visit an author’s home page and learn about the author.  Through this workshop students can write down one fact they learned about the author such as how the author comes up with ideas for books.   Students can then share their facts.  I think this would be very motivating for students because several of my first graders struggle to come up with ideas to write a small moment story about.  They can connect to the author and feel successful through this project.  I would create a jumpcode to the link or links they should study.  I also could add it to our class symbaloo website so students can easily access the sites at home or at school.  I can also share this activity with my team members, so all of first grade can experience a Internet workshop.

Another idea I have in my mind, is to somehow Skype or send emails to other classrooms.  My mother, brother-in-law, and several friends are teachers at other schools.  It would be fun to provide students with insight to other classrooms through the Internet.  Perhaps later, I could expand to another state or country!

  1. Beth-
The Authors as Mentors Unit sounds like a lot of fun! Love your idea of going to the author's home pages to learn more. There are so many great resources there and it would really inspire students to connect with the writer and see themselves as writers too.

I have also been thinking about the possibility of connecting with other classrooms, but the thought overwhelms me. I just joined the Global Classroom Project a couple of weeks ago for that purpose, but I don't know where to start! There are so many benefits to connecting with other classrooms-providing an authentic audience, learning about other communities or cultures, providing responsibility for students like Daryl in the article and so much more.

  2. Beth-
Your Authors as Mentors does sound like a good unit! I love going to author websites to learn more about the authors too! We just finished reading Small Steps by Peg Kehret. The kids went online and explored a little about the author of that autobiography. After reading the book they couldn't wait to get back on and read more about the author. She has a great blog of her own.

  4. Hi Beth,

I love the idea of connecting with another classroom through Skype. I think your students would really enjoy learning about different cultures and how other students are learning. I'd really enjoy hearing about it if you decide to do it!

  6. Beth,
I think using author websites is a great idea to get your students excited about a book they are reading! Giving them an opportunity to share what they have learned will definitely be motivating to them! I also thought it was a great idea when you mentioned starting off with Skyping other classrooms you are familiar with--I think sometimes as teachers we have so many great ideas, it is sometimes good to start out small and then expand our knowledge (ex. Skyping with other schools/countries).
